Necessity of climate protection and increasing scarcity of resources require providing new technologies for efficient usage of raw materials and energy. Therefore inter professional research and developement at the Institute of Lightweigth Structures is focused on creating lightweight structures with high performance and functional content and associated processing. In accordance with the Chemnitz model of bivalent resource efficiency (BRE strategy) a high material and energy efficiency is aimed by holistic value chain as well as usage of parts and components. Production oriented processing of contour and load adjusted fiber reinforced and hybrid structures are unique features. Presently the IST coordinates the exclusive Cluster of excellence on the topic of lightweight research. Moreover, institutes director Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Prof. h. c. Dr. h. c. Prof. L. Kroll heads the affiliated institute CETEX and Kunststoffzentrum Oberlausitz at Fraunhofer IWU
