Short Course on Finite Elements Modelling for Strings and Membranes with Damping

Dr. R. Schneider

General info

Date: 30/03/2009 -- 09/04/2009
Hours: 4 x 2 hours lecture
Place: University of Osijek, Coratia

Support material

  • Contact me to get the lecture notes (1.1 MB PDF).
  • Matlab demo for a string (1d).
  • Matlab demo for a membrane (2d). Uses the Matlab FEM code AFEM@matlab, which is included for convenience.
Run "startup_AFEMmatl" to set some paths (required only once per session), then run "wave_RS". You can choose from different initial and boundary conditions by modifying "prob=2" at the top of "wave_RS.m" (see source code for possible choices) or define your own.
Computed solutions for a finer mesh (24576 nodes) are shown in the following videos. The computations took approximately 30 min on my slow laptop (due to the relatively fine mesh and non-optimal matlab code). The video files are 1.3 MB each.
    case1.avi, case2.avi, case3.avi, case4.avi, case5.avi, case6.avi.
